A trip out to Japan to photograph Shigeru Miyamoto, the inventor of Mario, Donkey Kong and the Wii (plus lots of other things Nintendo have produced over the years. Flew out there with Bryan Appleyard for the Sunday Times Magazine and the very nice PR guys from Nintendo Ben and Lewis. Flew into Tokyo, then straight out to Kyoto. Kyoto is a beautiful city and during the four days we were there, met some of the most polite and ruthlessly organised people ever. I shot Miyamoto in Nintendo’s HQ compound in Kyoto. Spent the rest of the time there looking around, eating in some great restaurants and looking around a bookstore in the city centre. The Japanese produce some amazing photobooks – quite different from US and European. Not many western photographers on show there apart from the usual suspects, so had a couple of hours looking at loads of new work.
